Surviving the Storm of Anxiety - Day 2
Surviving the Storm of Anxiety
Trusting the One Who Controls the Waves
"Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, 'Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!' He replied, 'You of little faith, why are you so afraid?' Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm."
— Matthew 8:24-26 (NIV)
Many of Jesus' disciples were professional fishermen. They had spent their entire lives on the Sea of Galilee and knew its waters intimately. Yet, this particular storm was so fierce that even these seasoned sailors were gripped by absolute terror. They were convinced they were going to die. It is believed that the storm was so fierce it had demonic force behind it and was meant to kill Jesus and His disciples.
Anxiety often strikes hardest when we encounter situations that push us past our own expertise, resources, or ability to cope. When the medical report is confusing, when the bills outpace the paycheck, or when a relationship suddenly fractures, we feel like water is pouring over the sides of our boat.
But in the middle of this chaos, we find a striking contrast: Jesus was sleeping.
How could He sleep while the boat was sinking? Jesus wasn't ignoring the storm, nor was He unaware of the danger. He was simply resting in the absolute authority He held over it. From this powerful story, we can learn three vital truths to anchor us when anxiety threatens to pull us under:
1. His Presence Doesn't Prevent the Storm
We often mistakenly believe that if we are following God, our lives should be smooth sailing. But the disciples were in this furious storm precisely because they had followed Jesus into the boat. The presence of a storm in your life does not mean God has abandoned you or that you've done something wrong. The storm is simply an opportunity to discover who is in the boat with you.
2. Panic Blinds Us to His Power
The disciples woke Jesus with an accusation born of panic: "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" Anxiety has a way of magnifying our problems while minimizing our Savior. It convinces us that the boat is going down and God doesn't care. But Jesus gently corrects their perspective before He even addresses the weather: "Why are you so afraid?" He invites us to look at Him before we look at the waves in our lives and become anxious.
3. His Word Brings the Calm
With a simple rebuke, Jesus commanded the wind and the waves, and the result was a complete, glassy calm. The elements of nature instantly recognized the voice of their Creator. When anxiety is howling in your mind, your own logic and reasoning often aren't enough to quiet it. You need the authority of His Word. Speaking God's promises over your fears is how you invite His calming presence into your chaos.
Whatever storm is raging around you today, remember that the One who controls the wind and the waves is sitting right beside you. You don't have to bail the water out all by yourself. You can rest, knowing that He is fully awake to your needs and fully in control of the outcome.
Questions for Reflection
- In what area of your life do you feel like you are frantically bailing water while God seems to be "sleeping"?
- How does knowing that Jesus has ultimate authority over your situation change the way you view your current anxiety?
- What is one specific promise from God's Word that you can speak out loud over your fears today?
Daily Prayer
Lord, the waves of anxiety in my life feel so high right now, and I confess that I have been giving in to panic. Forgive me for forgetting that You are in the boat with me. Thank You that no storm is too big for Your authority. Please speak Your words of "peace, be still" over my racing mind and anxious heart today. Help me to rest in Your power rather than relying on my own strength. In Jesus' name, Amen.
