The S.O.A.P. Method
A simple yet profound way to read, understand, and apply God's Word to your daily life.
Why S.O.A.P.?
Sometimes, opening the Bible can feel overwhelming. We wonder where to start or how to apply ancient texts to modern life. S.O.A.P. is an acronym that helps you slow down, digest Scripture, and hear what God is personally saying to you today.
Breaking It Down
Scripture
Write down the verse that spoke to you.
Open your Bible to your daily reading plan. As you read, one or two verses will likely stand out or tug at your heart. Take the time to physically write those verses out word-for-word in your journal. Writing forces you to slow down and notice every single word.
Observation
What is happening in this text?
Ask yourself: What is the context? Who is speaking, and who are they speaking to? What feels important, repeated, or surprising? Try to summarize what the author was trying to convey to the original audience in your own words.
Application
How does this apply to your life today?
This is where God's Word becomes personal. Ask yourself: "How does this truth affect my life today? Is there a sin to confess, a promise to claim, an attitude to change, or an action to take?" Make it personal, practical, and actionable.
Prayer
Write a prayer response to God.
Close your study by writing out a short prayer. Thank God for revealing His truth to you. Ask Him for the strength, wisdom, and grace to live out the application you just wrote down. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation.
See It In Action
Here is an example of what a daily S.O.A.P. journal entry looks like:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7
Paul is encouraging believers to bring all their worries and concerns to God through prayer. He promises that God's peace will protect our hearts and minds, even in stressful situations.
I often find myself worrying about work and family issues. Today, I will take a moment to pray about these concerns instead of letting anxiety take over. I will trust that God is in control and will give me peace.
Lord, thank You for reminding me not to be anxious. Help me to bring all my worries to You in prayer and to trust in Your peace. Guard my heart and mind today as I face challenges. In Jesus' name, Amen.
