Guarding Our Hearts from Wicked Counsel
Guarding Our Hearts from Wicked Counsel
Choosing Godly Wisdom Over the Ways of the Wicked
"Yet he filled their houses with good [things]: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me."
— Job 22:18 (KJV)
In the midst of hardship and trials, it can be tempting to listen to advice that promises quick fixes or easy solutions. Yet, the source of counsel we accept has a profound impact on our spiritual well-being and the blessings we experience. In the book of Job, we see a powerful reminder about the value of godly counsel and the dangers of embracing wicked advice.
Job 22:18 offers a striking contrast — God fills the houses of the faithful with good things, but the counsel of the wicked is far from the believer’s heart. This verse challenges us to examine whose voice we are heeding in our daily decisions and spiritual walk. This idea is also repeated in Psalm 1:1 Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. This lets us know as Christains to not seek advice from ungodly people.
As we meditate on this verse, let us open our hearts to discernment and seek the guidance that leads to life, blessing, and peace. God’s wisdom is always near to those who desire it, and it stands in stark opposition to the counsel that leads to destruction.
1. God’s Blessings Fill Our Homes
The verse begins by declaring that God fills the houses of the righteous with good things. This is a beautiful reminder that God’s provision extends beyond material wealth to include peace, joy, and spiritual abundance. When we walk in obedience and seek His counsel, our lives are enriched in ways that truly matter.
2. The Danger of Wicked Counsel
Wicked counsel is described as something far from the believer. This distance is not accidental but intentional. The advice of the wicked often leads to confusion, sin, and separation from God. Recognizing and rejecting such counsel protects our hearts and keeps us aligned with God’s purposes.
3. Choosing Whose Voice to Hear
Every day, we face choices about whose advice to accept — friends, family, culture, or God’s Word. Job 22:18 encourages us to intentionally choose counsel that aligns with God’s truth. This choice influences the atmosphere of our homes and the trajectory of our lives.
4. Cultivating a Heart That Seeks God’s Wisdom
To keep the counsel of the wicked far from us, we must cultivate a heart that desires God’s wisdom above all else. This involves prayer, reading Scripture, and surrounding ourselves with godly mentors. As we do this, God’s guidance becomes a lamp to our feet, illuminating the path to abundant life.
Let us commit to filling our homes and hearts with the good things that come from God — His peace, wisdom, and love. By rejecting the counsel that is contrary to His Word, we protect ourselves from harm and position ourselves to receive His richest blessings.
May we be people who seek God’s counsel first and foremost, trusting that His wisdom will guide us through every challenge and decision. His good things await us as we walk faithfully in His ways.
