In the book of Esther, we encounter a pivotal moment in Esther 3:11 where King Ahasuerus grants Haman a significant and dangerous authority: "And the king said unto Haman, The silver [is] given to thee, the people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to thee." As believers, we recognize that all authority ultimately comes from God, yet He often works through earthly rulers and leaders. This moment in Esther’s story reminds us to be mindful of how authority is exercised and the consequences of not submitting to earthly authority to stand up for God's ultimate authority. It also highlights the potential for misuse of power when it is not aligned with God’s justice and mercy.

Whether in leadership, relationships, or daily decisions, we are called to steward our authority wisely and humbly, always guided by God’s truth and love. It also calls for us to be obedient, knowing that a certain type of honor and worship is reserved only for God.

Authority

The king’s permission to Haman is a delegation of authority. But it is the "why" that leads us to examine this scripture more deeply. Why did Modecia not bow down when asked? His response was simple: "I am a Jew". As Christians, there are some authorities that it is ok not to bow down to when it goes against our God.

The Danger of Misused Power

Haman’s authority led to a decree that threatened the lives of the Jewish people. This warns us that power can be without godly wisdom and compassion which can cause harm. We must seek God’s heart to avoid selfish or destructive decisions. We have to stand strong and honor God regardless of earthly authorities.

God’s Sovereignty in Difficult Circumstances

Despite Haman’s evil intentions, God’s sovereign plan unfolds through Esther’s courage and faith. This teaches us that even when others misuse authority, God is still in control, working all things for His good purposes.

Our Call to Stewardship

Whether in small or great responsibilities, we are called to steward what God entrusts to us with integrity and love. This verse challenges us to ask how we are using our influence to serve God and be a witness to a lost world. As Christians, it's ok to challenge the authorities that don't support our God or our ability to worship God.

Esther 3:11 confronts us with the reality of authority and the critical importance of how it is wielded. It invites us to lean into God’s wisdom and justice as we navigate our own roles and responsibilities.

May we be faithful stewards who honor God by using all that He entrusts to us for His glory and the good of others, trusting that He remains sovereign over every circumstance.
