Guarding Our Words: The Power of the Tongue

Understanding the Weight of Our Speech Through Psalm 140:3

"They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison [is] under their lips. Selah."

- Psalm 140:3 (KJV)

The words we speak hold immense power. They can build up or tear down, heal or wound, encourage or discourage. Psalm 140:3 paints a vivid picture of the destructive capacity of harmful speech, likening it to the venom of a serpent.

In this verse, the David highlights the danger of malicious words by describing them as tongues sharpened like serpents and poison hidden under lips. This imagery reminds us to be mindful of how we communicate, recognizing that words can be as harmful as physical weapons.

As followers of Christ, we are called to use our words to reflect His love and grace. This devotional invites us to examine our speech, seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in taming our tongues, and commit to speaking life and truth in all circumstances.

The Sharpness of Words

Psalm 140:3 compares harmful speech to a serpent’s sharpened tongue, emphasizing how words can be intentionally pointed and hurtful. Just as a serpent’s bite can cause pain and damage, so can careless or malicious words wound others deeply.

The Hidden Danger of Poison

The verse describes the poison under their lips, suggesting that harmful intentions can be concealed behind seemingly harmless speech. This calls us to be discerning about the motives behind what we say and to guard against deceitfulness in our conversations.

The Call to Selah – Pause and Reflect

Using a simple interpretation of the word 'Selah' invites us to pause and meditate on the seriousness of the message. It encourages us to reflect on how our words impact others and to seek God’s help in using our tongues wisely and lovingly.

Choosing Words That Heal

Instead of sharpening our tongues like serpents, we are called to speak words that bring encouragement, hope, and healing. Proverbs 15:4 reminds us that 'a wholesome tongue is a tree of life,' pointing to the life-giving power of kind speech.

Psalm 140:3 serves as a sobering reminder of the potential harm our words can cause. Yet, it also offers an opportunity for transformation—to replace poison with healing, anger with kindness, and deceit with honesty.

May we be ever mindful of the words we speak, seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance to ensure our tongues reflect the love and grace of Jesus Christ in every conversation.

Questions for Reflection

  • How do my words reflect the heart of Christ in my daily interactions?
  • Are there times when my speech has caused harm, and how can I seek forgiveness and healing?
  • What practical steps can I take to guard my tongue and speak words that build up rather than tear down?

Daily Prayer

Lord, I come before You asking for Your help in guarding my tongue. Teach me to speak words that bring life, encouragement, and truth. Help me to pause and reflect before I speak, so that my words may reflect Your love and grace. Transform my heart and my speech, that I may be a vessel of Your peace and kindness to those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
